Roland,

You did it the right way.  You sent me a message.  The ringtone you asked for (Cramer Haas, long) is attached.

Glad to know that you appreciated our work well enough during your tour to want a copy of "Good Morning, Vietnam."

Respectfully,

Jim W

Enter Vietnam in the search box

There are at least 2 versions there. I use ‘Fixin’ To Die Rag’ as a tone for guys from our squadron there.

There are literally thousands of tones available for free.

Great idea.  I rather think it depends on the cell phone and whether you can “import” a ring tone.  We’re using 6 year old cell phones which will import a ring -- we use our dog’s bark.   It sure lets us know whose phone it is, we’ve never encountered anyone else with a barking phone and it sure gets a lot of attention.

I don't have a clue as to the file format.  My phones record the actual audio, so I suppose any format which will play as audio will work with older cell phones.  Newer smart phones may have greater capabilities.

We have a new member on the AFVN Yahoo Group as of today.  He has asked "Is there anyway I can have that intro for AFVN Radio and use it on my cell phone when someone calls me?   Thanks."

I assume he wants to use "Good Moooooooorning, Vietnam" for a ring tone.  I could rather easily copy out the first 24 seconds of Don Fox's (or any other) GMV as an audio file and ask anyone who wants a copy to send an email request.  It would be nice if I could make it a download directly available from the site but it appears that such is not possible.

Now, some questions:
1.  Does Don Fox object to this?  I suggested his version because Bob Morecook had used it on the old site and I have moved it to the new one.
2.  Does anyone else see a problem with doing this?  It would be another, and perhaps a nice way, to "further advertise" our existence.
3.  What file format is appropriate for cell phone ring tones?   I assume MP3 is best.

The only problem I see is that if all of you ask for it and all of you use it for your cell phones and all of your phones ring at one time during the reunion....then how are all of you going to know who should answer his phone?

Thanks,

Jim W

Bob,
More specifically, there are a number of "Good Morning, Vietnam" clips at

http://www.zedge.net/ringtones/0-1-1-good%20morning%20vietnam/?sug-search=0&searchphr=good+morning+vietnam&searchcat=ringtones

However, with a few exceptions they all sound about the same and none of them really sound at all authentic.  Is the guy just yelling into the wind?  "Authentic" might be the wrong word, because (for the AFVN group) it may be we are all used to what we are all used to.

I did download one of them and it showed that MP3 appears to be the proper format for ringtones.   I needed to confirm that because I don't mess with ringtones.  I do have two cellphones, one for here in Japan and a TracFone when I am in the U.S.  However I seldom use (or even turn on) either one and to me a cellphone is still a phone and should sound like a phone.

In summary, thanks for the link but I'm still going to offer Don Fox's or possibly Cramer Haas's version (or both).

Jim
